Overview
The goal of this project was to embody a character through both visual and conceptual design in a book. The Moon Rabbit, a figure from folklore, was chosen as the central character, and a tactile children’s book was developed to enhance the storytelling experience. Every element – from the handcrafted Japanese Four-Stab Binding to the soft, sewn cover – was thoughtfully designed to reflect the story’s heritage and provide an engaging, sensory experience for young readers.

The Challenge
The challenge was to seamlessly blend storytelling, illustration, and physical craftsmanship into a cohesive book. It needed to honor the traditional folklore while feeling engaging and accessible to children. Additionally, incorporating interactive elements such as cut-outs and textured materials required thoughtful material selection and precise execution.
The Solution
The illustrations were crafted using papers with different textures and the collage technique, adding depth and a tactile quality to the visual narrative. To emphasize cultural heritage, traditional Japanese Four-Stab Binding was carefully handmade. The cut-outs were created with a 3D plotter, adding depth and playfulness to the pages. To enhance the sensory experience, a fluffy cover was sewn and designed to invite children to interact with the book beyond just reading.
The Result
This project blends storytelling, craftsmanship, and interactive design to bring the Moon Rabbit legend to life. Through handmade details, thoughtful material choices, and a focus on sensory engagement, the book offers a unique and immersive reading experience.
